Founded
in 1820 by Rev. Dr. William Carey with the set-out objectives: development
and promotion of agriculture and horticulture in India.

The
Society then catered to the needs of the total Agri-horticultural
functions of the country and acted as the de facto Agriculture Ministery
of the Central Government till 1900.
-
The
society has a unique history of achievements and played a pioneering
role in the introduction of a wide array of cereals, cash crops, cinchona,
fruits, vegetables, flowering trees and ornamental plants.

It organized
the first ever Flower and Vegetable Show in the country in 1828 and
published the first ever Agricultural Journal in the country in 1837.
- The
Society was awarded the 'Royal' Charter in 1935 by King George V.

Since
its inception, various Governor-Generals and Viceroys were the Chief
Patrons of the Society and, after independence, the President of India
has adorned this position.
