The Horticulture Development Foundation set forth on its mission in bringing people close to nature and also spread the awareness of the importance of Medicinal and Herbal plants throughout India. India is known to have a rich natural resource of Medicinal & Herbal plants and the knowledge of using them for healthcare and for other human benefits have existed since ancient time. It is now well known because of ruthless collection of plants from the wild and due to encroachment and conversion of natural forest land for agriculture and development such as construction of dams, industries and urbanization, a large number of important plant species have become extinct or categorized as endangered species. Among the most vulnerable area in India is the Himalayan region that abode the largest number of plants of medicinal and aromatic values. |

During the last few decades there is a growing interest among common people on medicinal plants for their uses in the traditional health care system as harmless curative medicine. Apart from uses of Indian herbs as medicine its importance as safe ingredients for preparation of cosmetics has been realized and multimillion rupees industries have grown not only in India but abroad. Consequently demand of Indian medicinal plants has increased manifold and as such pressure on wild plants population has also increased.

Considering this alarming situation, The Agri Horticultural Society of India under the banner of Horticulture Development Foundation could not ignore its social responsibility to bring before the common people the importance of our indigenous ancient art of medicine and medicinal plants.
To every Indian mind the Himalaya holds a revered space, therefore this is our humble effort to start a project for preparing a 3 volume Encyclopedia of Himalayan Medicinal Flora for use of the common people interested to know the medicinal plant wealth in Himalayas. In preparing this voluminous text work, we got immense cooperation from Government and non Government department, individuals and scientists of international repute.
We feel satisfied that we could carry forward Dr. William Carey’s (the founder) vision to raise this organization to the highest peak in respect of knowledge and quality.
